Amarillo Children’s Home is a faith-based, Christian organization seeking a House Parent to supervise, nurture, and care for children aged 5–18 in a family-style living environment on campus. Applicants must be able to live on-site, safely manage a residential group of children, and support the mission of ACH. Prior experience working with youth and a valid driver’s license are required.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
Required-
- Must have a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience working with youth of any age is required.
- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
- Must have a valid Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record.
- Must be willing to support the “ACH Statement of Faith,” a copy of which can be found on the ACH website at https://amarillochildrenshome.org/mission and is also available from ACH administrative staff on request
- Per TDFPS Minimum Standards for General Residential Operations, Sec. 748.505, “Must be a physically, mentally and emotionally healthy adult with the knowledge, skills and ability to do the tasks in the job description, and have no health or behavioral issues that present a danger to children in care.”
- Must be able to read, write and communicate with others involved in the child-care process.
- Must have no disqualifying criminal history; must be willing to submit to a thorough criminal and background check that may include submitting to an FBI fingerprint check.
- Must submit to and pass a drug test.
Preferred-
- College coursework in social work, education, youth behavioral sciences, child development or a related field is preferred.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Supervise and ensure the safety, health, and well-being of youth in a family-style residential setting
- Support children’s emotional, social, academic, and personal development through guidance and structured activities
- Administer medications and maintain documentation according to protocols
- Plan, prepare, and serve balanced meals; teach hygiene and life skills
- Maintain accurate records, allowances, and household finances
- Collaborate with staff, school personnel, and other professionals to support each child’s progress
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of the living environment
- Transport children safely for school, appointments, and activities as needed
- · Participate in required trainings and staff meetings
- Model appropriate behaviors, morals, and judgment for youth in care
- Participate in activities designed to support the spiritual development of children as part of the organization’s Christian faith-based programs (applicant personal beliefs are not required)
Schedule:
The House Parents’ work week consists of five days on and two days off with the days off being either Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday, depending on which home they are assigned to. During school days, they normally come on duty at 8 am and go off duty at 10 pm; however, they may have “down” time during the day when they are not actively working while children are in school. The schedule may be different on weekends or days when children aren’t attending school, and they should follow the guidance of their supervisor for the appropriate hours of duty during these non-school days. The position may require some additional flexibility to work other times and shifts as needed and/or as directed by the administration; for example, they might shift their two days off to different days during the week of Family Camp during the summer. Additional hours may be needed for training, campus activities or other job-related activities.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
- Must be a person of sound judgment and good moral character and have the ability to serve as a role model for a large number of youth in a responsible manner.
- Must be able to identify and apply principles of logical thinking for problem solving during youth crisis.
- Must be able to provide positive feedback to youth; ability to motivate youth to make positive life changes.
- Must be able to learn, implement and oversee all treatment approaches in an integrated manner.
- Must demonstrate the desire and ability to teach youth.
- Ability to read and write English.
- Ability to communicate effectively with youth, staff, families, caseworkers, probation officers, medical personnel, support agencies, vendors, community members, donors, board members and other professionals.
